Course contents :
This 3-day introductory course covers the foundations of dry needling, the myofascial pain syndrome, trigger points and the clinical highlights of dry needling. The course is a hands on course. Participants practice dry needling of the top 30 muscles among each other. This is a training program with immediate clinical applicability upon completion.
Course objectives :
Upon completion of the course, participants will …
– understand the basic scientific backgrounds of the myofascial pain syndrome and of trigger points.
– be able to identify the top 30 muscles by surface anatomy, palpation and by function and know their clinical symptoms and perpetuating factors.
– be able to identify the features of trigger points by physical examination and apply this knowledge to the top 30 muscles.
– understand the specific indications and contraindications of dry needling.
– know and be able to apply the safety rules for dry needling.
– be able to perform dry needling of the top 30 muscles.
– know possible side effects and complications of dry needling and will be able to react appropritate.
– have updated their anatomy skills and knowledge.

Johnson McEvoy is a Chartered Physiotherapist in private practice in Ireland. He graduated with a BSc in physiotherapy in 1993 from Trinity College Dublin and subsequently worked in the USA for four years. He holds a masters degree in sports physiotherapy (2004) and a doctorate from the University of St Augustine in Florida (2008). He works as head physiotherapist with Irish Amateur Boxing since 2003 and was an accredited Olympic Physiotherapist in Athens in 2004. He has a keen interest in myofascial pain and dry needling and tends to have a multimodal approach to patient care. In Ireland since 2004 he has trained over 500 physiotherapists in trigger point palpation and has recently co-authored a chapter reviewing trigger point reliability studies (2009). He is an instructor with the DGSA and has taught dry needling in Ireland since 2006.
Christian Gröbli graduated in 1994 with a state diploma in Physical Therapy in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. For the next five years he worked with Dr. Beat Dejung, MD in Winterthur where he was able to intensify his knowledge and practical experience in treating pain patients. He is an independent PT since 1999, specialized in the treatment of pain patients. In 2005, he founded Swiss PhysioCare®, together with Ricky Weissmann. Since 1997 Christian Gröbli teaches courses in manual trigger point therapy and dry needling in Switzerland, Europe, Middle East, the USA and South America. For eight years he was head of the faculty of the Society for Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy (IMTT) in Switzerland. Christian Gröbli has been invited internationally as a speaker for congresses and for different workshops and seminars. He is he the author of several books, articles and book chapters. Christian Gröbli is the co-founder and president of the David G. Simons Academy™ and has received the “Janet Travell Training Grant” from the International Myopain Society, IMS
